The Mane Event

{My Van Michael-made Anne Hathaway Oscar hair re-creation.} Van Michael has been my go-to salon for years. And Todd, my stylist, well, if I could kidnap him, I would. Not only do he and my hair get along like peas and carrots, I just adore him. He manages to execute all my insane requests (finger waves, retro curls) like a boss. So, when Van Michael told me it was turning 12 this month, I was beyond happy to help them celebrate. And celebrate they are. Starting today, July 3, the first 12 new customers who call in each day from now through July 12 and wish Van Michael a happy anniversary will receive a complimentary cut and color, as well as experience Aveda rituals with new talent Sean, Roxie and Bethany. That’s 12 days of free hairdos. All you have to do is call  305-534-6789. Find Van Michael at 1667 Michigan…Read More

I Steal Anne Hathaway’s Oscar Hair and Makeup

As unofficial president of the girls-with-short-hair club, I was elated to see major celebs sporting pixie cuts at the Oscars this year: Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, and Anne Hathaway. And when Van Michael Miami Salon asked me to be the short hair model for their Deco Drive Oscar makeover story, I, of course, said yes. A celeb-style makeover:  that’s a no-brainer. With Leslie Munsell giving makeup transformations and Jessica Richardson killing it in the celeb hair department, it went a little something like this: Annie Vazquez of The Fashion Poet getting her reverse chignon updo and makeup on a la Jennifer Lawrence. In lieu of Anne’s awful high beam hinting gown, I’m wearing my vintage beaded dress and Pour la Victoire shoes. Me pretending to be Anne Hathaway, Jalene as Reese Witherspoon in old Hollywood waves, Crystal as Jennifer Hudson in sleek and straight and Annie as Jennifer Lawrence all done up. I’m rocking…Read More

Hair: The Long and Short of It

Behold, my hair progression. My current incarnation, the bob, started as a regrowth from the Carey Mulligan-inspired pixie I cut back in 2009. A few months later Emma Watson chopped her hair just like mine, and I felt way en vogue. (And not just like a new mom who needed to do something different to change up the way I look/felt.) A year and change later, I started to grow it back out, until I met Todd at Van Michael Miami Salon, who inspired me to keep it short. He is, hands down, the best stylist ever. Want me to prove it? I’m partnering with Van Michael Miami Salon to give away a cut, style and makeup lesson. Yup, you can get your hair did with my beloved Todd, and then spend some time with makeup artist Lee to get the trends for fall down pat. With a new season on…Read More

Hair: The Long and Short of It

{If only you could see me in the wig cap underneath. As if.} Laugh freely at this post. I encourage you to. That’s what I’m here for, entertainment. I mean, I have on a wig. I’m totally asking for it. Why am I wearing a wig, you ask? Good question. I’m not sure what it is about summertime, but I often consider a hair revamp of sorts as soon as its nearly 900 degrees out. This year, I can’t decide whether to grow it lush and long or chop it all off and go auburn. My beloved stylist, Todd, and colorist, Taylor, at Van Michael suggested a trip to the wig shop to see a) if I even like the idea of long hair and b) what glimpsing myself with a color change looks like in my eyes. And that’s exactly what I did. I went to Ricky’s on Lincoln…Read More

In 2011 …

What were you doing when you were ringing in ‘11? There goes another 365. And here’s what I found along the way that made my year: Todd at Van Michael When I found out Siobhan was leaving Van Michael Miami Salon in the middle of my hair grow out, I considered moving to wherever it was she was going. Seriously. This girl was my hair lifeline. And a good friend. And while I miss Siobhan and our girl chats dearly, I can’t thank her enough for recommending Todd. Yes, I know I’ve tweeted off and on recently about my hair love affair with Todd, and it’s true, I love him. Not only is he adorable, I mean seriously, seriously adorable, he can tame my mane. And his massages are phenom. There’s three reasons why I visit the salon at least once a week right there. I am so glad I…Read More
