Sweet.

While you’re scarfing down chocolates and then squeezing yourself into lingerie (seriously, who thought of this holiday?), I thought I’d take a minute to give you the real deal history of February 14.

Legend has it back in the day, an evil Roman ruler named Claudius the Cruel put a ban on marriage in his kingdom. Why would he do such a thing? Because the men around town decided they’d rather stay home with their wives than go into battle. Oh, the jokes that stem from that little gem. More concerned with making war than love, this pushed Claudius over the edge and he banned marriage. Head-over-heels-in-love couples, who insisted on making it official, however could not be stopped and secretly married with the help of St. Valentine. When Claudius found out what Valentine was up to, he offed him. Hence, the first Valentine’s Day. It’s really not all about prix-fixe dinner menus, reservations races and chalk-flavored candy message hearts. We’re actually commemorating the death of someone who risked his life to bring people together. There’s something to think about while you’re poking the bottom of your Russell Stover chocolates to make sure you don’t get the coconut one.

Happy Valentine’s Day.
