Get Reading, Miami

Because bloggers cannot live on fashion mags alone. When I was a kid, all I wanted was a library card so I could check out my own books from the stacks. As a motivational tactic to learn how to write my nine-letter last name (Fulkerson), my mom told me I could get one just as soon as I could spell the behemoth. So I did. Some years later, I saw that card, which was kept on file at my hometown library, with my pre-Kindergarden scribble scrabble. What can I say, I’ve always been a reader. I love books. And now there are two new places to find them in Miami Beach and Miami.

{Behold, the Readery now at The Standard Spa.}

Up first. The Readery. It’s a pop up in the middle of the lobby at The Standard, and it’s packed with a bookworm’s essentials: Warby Parker glasses, first edition novels from some of my favorites, like Ken Kesey and Jack Kerouc (from whom the glasses company gets its name), as well as vintage Village Voice papers. The shop’s arrival marks a collaboration between Warby Parker and The Standard to kick out some awesome frames that have, up until now, only been available in the gift shop. You can also find the fall line in the kiosk. Cute? Look, it’s worth it to ban carrots from your life now so your failing vision will require these geek-chic frames.

Further down the road, you can find Biscayne Books, attached to Balans on Biscayne. Finally, a book store in Miami! Owner Susan D. Hanna buys books second-hand from auctions and estate sales and sells them for anywhere from $1 to $15 (with first editions going for $5 and $15). It’s like sharing a good read in an eco-conscious fashion. She’s also organizing book clubs to be held at neighboring Balans. Want to read Gone Girl? She’ll order it for the whole club directly from the publisher for less than you can get it on Amazon. Hanna is currently looking for leaders to head up these book clubs, so if you live between the pages of novels, look her up. She also has kids books, graphic novels and classics. I scored The Great Gatsby for $2. And she recommended Cloud Atlas as my next read. Love a good book recommendation … from a local … at my neighborhood bookstore. Psyched.

Find The Readery at the Standard Spa at 40 Island Ave., Miami Beach. And Biscyane Books at 6701 Biscayne Blvd., Miami.
