Channeling Lupita Nyong’s Oscar Dress

T.J. Maxx and Marshall‘s challenged several bloggers to recreate their favorite Oscar red carpet look this week. And I was lucky enough to be part of the challenge. Without a doubt, Lupita Nyong was the best dressed at the 2014 Academy Awards. From her gown to her speech—”No matter where you are from, your dreams are valid”—it was her night. So when I considered the challenge, I felt compelled to make her Prada gown and Fred Leighton diamond headband into a look that worked off the red carpet.

For me, the most outstanding feature of her dress was the lightness of it. From the beautiful pale blue shade, to the flow of the fabric, it felt light, feminine, effortless. The deliberate lack of jewelry (wearing only a simple bracelet, earrings and the dainty headband) emphasized the airiness of the look. And while I couldn’t see her shoes, I envisioned this modern-day Cinderella sporting a glass slippers.

I started my look by building it around the hue. While we can’t all walk the red carpet in a stunning gown, we can wear a great spring dress that works for both day and night. I found this less formal, but equally flowy designer frock at TJ Maxx for under $100. I paired it with clear designer slippers with silver and crystal bow detail, also from TJ Maxx. For accessories, I wore a vintage headband and clear vintage bracelets, light items that didn’t weigh the look down.

I like to think of my recreation as Oscar style goes street. To see more Oscar blogger recreations, check out the hashtag #MarshallsTJMaxx. To shop spring dresses and recreate your own Oscar-inspired look, check out T.J. Maxx and Marshalls.
